TAB WEEKEND RACING HIGHLIGHTS: 30 APRIL – 3 MAY

THE GAME IS ON WITH LOCAL FIREPOWER AND GLOBAL ACTION!

It’s a packed weekend of racing, with high-quality action from Friday through to Sunday. The programme opens at Fairview on Friday, where a typically competitive card is headlined by a cracking sprint clash between some of the best older runners around. On Saturday, the spotlight shifts to Hollywoodbets Greyville, where two strong groups of three-year-olds line up in the respective Guineas, while in the UK that same generation takes centre stage in the 2000 Guineas on Saturday and the 1000 Guineas on Sunday – both under the World Pool umbrella. Sunday rounds things off at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth with three quality feature races to close out the local weekend in style. Plenty to get stuck into – now it’s just a question of finding the right ones!

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

FAIRVIEW: INSIDE DRAW COULD GIVE FAIRY KNIGHT THE EDGE

The Eastern Cape’s four top sprinters – Fairy Knight, Cruise Control, Mercantour and Cliff Top – line up in Race 7, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1200m. They all have claims in what should be a close contest, but Fairy Knight has the best form on the Polytrack and the benefit of an inside draw. He should be cherry ripe in his third run after a rest and looks set to post his 14th career success.

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS

MORPHETVILLE (AUSTRALIA): MAHER HOLDS THE ACES IN DERBY

European stayer Accidental Bid is the horse to beat in Group 1 South Australian Derby over 2500m – if he gets a start. Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Ciaron Maher is playing the unpleasant waiting game with the Derby favourite – who is first reserve – and needs a rival scratching to make the cut for the Derby’s field of 16. Maher has one guaranteed runner, Amazake, who finished third behind Derby rivals Single Choice and Arabian Prince in the Galilee Series Final (2400m) last start. “He’s had a really solid prep actually, I’ve been rapt with him, his first-up run at Pakenham – he closed really hard late,” Maher said. All TAB Win, Place, Quinella and Swinger bets will go into the massive Hong Kong pools for Races 6-8. The meeting starts at 03:52.

HOLLYWOODBETS GREYVILLE: THREE GRADE 2 FEATURES TOP THE BILL

The KwaZulu-Natal Champions Season is in full swing and leading three-year-olds cross swords in the two WSB Guineas renewals that top the bill at this meeting. The other features are the Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes and the Listed East Coast Cup, and the quality in every race makes for an exciting meeting. Below is a guide to the carryover Pick 6.

RACE-BY-RACE GUIDE TO TAB’S CARRYOVER PICK 6, HOLLYWOODBETS GREYVILLE – SATURDAY 2 MAY 2026
CARRYOVER: R500,000 – LIKELY POOL: R3 MILLION!

Leg 1 (13:50): Race 4 – 1600m THE INDEPENDENT ON SATURDAY SPORTS MAIDEN PLATE

All round, the exposed form of the three-year-olds in this Maiden Plate looks fairly moderate which gives progressive two-year-old 10 KAZ FROM ALCATRAZ a potential edge. He finished second to a promising type in a recent Juvenile Plate and should go close if he can overcome his wide draw. Of the others, 3 DIRECTOR and 7 GOOD OMEN have both shown enough to get involved, while diminutive gelding 8 BLACK PLATINA is consistently thereabouts and, with a touch of luck, could get his nose in front where it matters.

Leg 2 (14:25): Race 5 – 1400m INDEPENDENT ON SATURDAY DRILL HALLSTAKES (Grade 2)

There are several proven 1400m specialists and other high-class contenders in this contest, but, at present at the peak of his powers, 1 QUESTIONING is the one they all have to beat. Punters face a clear choice: bank on the Vaughan Marshall runner, or take a broader view and include 2 GLADATORIAN (runs well fresh and won this race last year), 3 LEGAL COUNSEL (3kg better off with 9 JET FORCE), 4 ROLAND GARROS (on the upgrade), 5 GREAT PLAINS (third in this race last year), and 8 THE REAL PRINCE (better over further, but a close fourth last year). From his inside draw, however, this is Questioning’s race to lose.

Leg 3 (15:05): Race 6 – 1600m WORLD SPORTS BETTING FILLIES GUINEAS (Grade 2)

A cracking contest between high-class fillies and familiar rivals 2 PRINCESS OF GAUL, 5 QUICKSTEPGAL and 8 WISH LIST. The trio last met in the 2025 Grade 1 WSB Cape Fillies, where Quickstepgal accounted for Wish List by two lengths, with Princess Of Gaul a further 0.50-lengths back. On that form, QUICKSTEPGAL has the edge, but both her rivals have progressed since – most notably WISH LIST, who has gone on to land two Grade 1s – which makes this less straightforward now. All three have strong claims and should be included.

Leg 4 (15:45): Race 7 – 1600m WORLD SPORTS BETTING GUINEAS (Grade 2)

If the official ratings are anywhere near the mark, 3 TIN PAN ALLEY (MR 128) should make this look like a procession. He sits 14 points clear of the second-highest rated runner 8 STAR MAJOR (MR 114) – roughly equal to seven lengths at level weights – and a differential of that magnitude is hard to dismiss. Even allowing for the ongoing debate around Tin Pan Alley’s rating, you would have to assume a sizeable error from the handicapper to bring any of his rivals into play. Trim him by 10 points and he’s still theoretically well in. On raw figures, he’s an absolute standout and the obvious Pick 6 banker. From a risk management angle, there’s merit in a saver: cover the race with the field in the Jackpot, just in case.

Leg 5 (16:25): Race 8 – 2000m THE INDEPENDENT ON SATURDAY INSIDER EAST COAST CUP (Listed)

An open race that calls for a wide spread in exotic permutations. 6 BAKWENA was a facile winner at her only previous attempt over this distance, has been holding form well in this class and slightly stronger, and looks well placed by her in-form trainer to add a Listed success to her record. Already a stakes winner, 4 LADYOFDISTINCTION brings proven class to the table but shapes as suspect beyond 1600m. In contrast, 5 GERBERA, 7 PLUM PUDDING and 9 ROSE WOOTT all boast solid staying credentials and have to be respected.

Leg 6 (17:00): Race 9 – 1000m THE INDEPENDENT ON SATURDAY E-EDITIONS CONDITIONS PLATE

6 TAXI TO THE MOON boasts excellent recent second places to William Robertson and Buffalo Storm Cody respectively, and with both of those absent, he should take a power of beating. High-rated 10 O’TENIKWA and 11 I AM GIANT both come through strong form lines behind Questioning, while 9 SAUDI CAT is an improving three-year-old sprinter with plenty of upside. On current form, this looks the quartet that matters in the final leg of the Pick 6.

SUGGESTED R252 (25%) PICK 6 PERM (Leg 1 Race 4 @ 13:50):

Leg 1:  2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8,10
Leg 2:  1, 2
Leg 3:  2, 5, 8
Leg 4:  3
Leg 5:  4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Leg 6:  6, 9, 10, 11

UK RACING:  THREE-YEAR-OLD STARS FACE OFF AT NEWMARKET

Saturday at Newmarket sees the running of Race 5, the Group 1 Betfred 2000 Guineas on The Rowley Mile, in which George Boughey’s unbeaten colt Bow Echo has been priced up favourite in what is likely to be a big field of up-and-coming three-year-olds. On Sunday, Aiden O’Brien’s stunning filly, Precise, goes for five wins in a row in Race 3, the Betfred 1000 Guineas. The HKJC World Pool will be in operation for Races 1-9 at Newmarket on Saturday, and Race 4 at Newmarket on Sunday. All TAB Win, Place, Quinella and Swinger bets will go into the Hong Kong pools for both high-profile meetings.

SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS

HOLLYWOODBETS KENILWORTH:  VIVA’S LIBERTE CAN STAKE ‘JULY’ CLAIM

Candice Bass’ promising three-year-old, Viva’s Liberte, has been entered for the 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July. He has a good opportunity to break through at graded level in Race 7, the Grade 3 Legal Eagle Stakes over 1800m, in which stablemate La Pulga and another ‘July’ hopeful, Tenpenny, are the principal threats. There are two other feature races on the card. Bass-trained Roccapina is well in at the weights in Race 5, the Listed Ladies Mile, and could prove hard to beat despite a sticky draw. Piet and Elbert Steyn’s impressive debut winner Earn The Weekend looks progressive enough to follow up in Race 6, the Grade 3 Winter Nursery over 1100m.

MALAYSIAN RACING:

There is a 10-race meeting at Selangor on Sunday, starting at 06:55.

HONG KONG RACING:

There is an 11-race meeting at Sha-Tin on Sunday.
