Open look to Premier Cup at Sha Tin

Hong Kong racing roars back to Sha Tin on Sunday, with an exciting 11-race card, headlined by the Group 3 Premier Cup and the Group 3 Premier Plate.

The Group 3 Premier Cup over 1400m shapes as a wide-open contest under handicap conditions this Sunday, with several runners holding genuine winning claims.

Regular Group 1 performers Galaxy Patch and Raging Blizzard may have a slight class edge on their rivals, but both face the challenge of carrying big weights. Patch Of Theta will relish the drop back to 1400m, a distance at which six of his seven career wins have come, and should produce an improved effort first-up.

Copartner Prance possesses the tactical speed to make his presence felt, though his inconsistent form suggests he may represent better value than confidence. The same could be said of Tomodachi Kokoroe, who endured a wide trip before finishing a creditable third in a Group 3 feature last time out.

Lightly weighted runners are difficult to overlook in a handicap of this nature, with Winning Ovation, Crimson Flash and Six Pack all fitting that profile. Another intriguing runner is Zac Purton ridden Little Paradise, who has disappointed since capturing the Hong Kong Classic Mile in February, but the drop from Group 1 to Group 3 company, coupled with a favourable weight, could see him bounce back and surprise.

Three-year-old gelding Absolute Heart looks primed for a first-up victory in the Class 4 Handicap over 1200m.

Absolute Heart defied a betting drift to score an impressive debut win in March, showing good tactical speed to lead throughout and score by 1.25 lengths over this track and distance. However, things did not go to plan at his following start, as he was only fairly away and had to be ridden along to find the lead.

The early effort took its toll in the straight, where he weakened to finish eighth, 7.25 lengths from the winner.

Returning from a 56-day break, Absolute Heart has tuned up for his first-up assignment with an effortless trial victory and looks capable of making full use of a decent draw. If able to dictate terms, he could prove difficult to reel in. Oldtown, an impressive last-start winner at this level, shapes as the main danger. – iRACE Magazine
