Fourie to fire at Fairview

Richard Fourie is back in action at Fairview on Wednesday and no doubt Eastern Cape champion Trainer Alan Greeff will be delighted.

In fairness, the two substitutes – Andrew Fortune first and then Aldo Domeyer once the former was injured – did sterling jobs, but Fourie knows the horses after a few years of being the stable’s first choice jockey.

He has a number of decent rides on Wednesday’s card when they race on the Polytrack and possibly the best of the bunch could be New Day who lines up in Race 7, a MR 66 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1400m.

This three-year-old daughter of Canford Cliffs has only raced three times, for a win and two thirds. She won her second start over 1300m at this course with ease and last time was touched off just 0.10 lengths in a tight three-cornered contest over 1200m.

She was finishing strongly and the additional 200m will make all the difference this time. She could provide the best banker on the card.

The trainer Greeff-Fourie combination has clearly worked out their charge, Travel Master, who lines up in Race 5, a Classified Stakes over 1400m.

This now nine-year-old went through a long period without scoring, but changing tactics and letting him lead has seen him win his last two starts. The key was the decision to race him in blinkers and add a tongue-tie. That gave him the desire to race up with the pace.

The first time they ran him with that configuration he finished a 1.25-length second behind World Pharoah, and that came after he hit the starting gate when dispatched. After that he got out like a bullet and led all the way.

The two successive wins that followed resulted in weight hikes which obviously has made life tougher for him, but he could still be able to complete his hat-trick.
