Damysus lock-ed in for Newbury prize

Damysus can tower over his rivals to come to the fore in the Boyle Sports Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained son of Frankel started his season evidently in good heart when winning the Group Three Earl Of Sefton Stakes by nearly four lengths at Newmarket in April.

He carried a 3lb penalty on the Rowley Mile for his prior successes last season, and seemed to have picked up right where he left off having finished last term with a course and distance win at the same level in the Darley Stakes.

Unbeaten since an unfortunate experience in the Derby, the chestnut, who is owned by Wathnan Racing, steps down to 1600m from 1800m at Newbury but as a 1400m winner with a good turn of foot he is hardly short of pace and seems poised to really make a mark during his four-year-old season.

On the same card the Childwickbury Stud Fillies’ Trial Stakes can go the way of Sacred Ground for the same Clarehaven Stable.

The Kingman filly is out of the dual Group One winner Anapurna, and last term made a satisfactory start to her career with a win on debut followed by a second-placed run in the Listed Montrose Stakes at Newmarket in November.

She returned to action this year at the same level in the Pretty Polly on the Rowley Mile, and it was perhaps disappointing to see her beaten comprehensively when going off as the 2-1 favourite.

The race was not run to suit, however, and she was left with a lot of work to do as she attempted to reel in a runaway winner who had left the field in her wake by halfway.

Karl Burke’s Royal Fixation can resume her career in winning fashion in the Listed Highclere Castle Gin Carnarvon Stakes over 1200m.

The Palace Pier filly fared well for Ed Walker as a juvenile when taking the Lowther at York after narrowly missing out on the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes to the very smart Venetian Sun.

Her final outing of the term was to the Rowley Mile for the Cheveley Park Stakes, where he came home third to the subsequent 1000 Guineas winner True Love when beaten less than 2 lengths.

She gets her campaign under way at Newbury having switched trainer, with Burke particularly adept at guiding the careers of this type of speedy filly.

At Newmarket, the Darley EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes has attracted some really promising types on pedigree, none more so than Andrew Balding’s beautifully-bred Jolivette.

The daughter of Wootton Bassett is a half-sister to the yard’s French 2000 Guineas runner-up Jonquil, who himself got off the mark at the first time of asking. – Press Association
