Two significant changes to Kenilworth card

Jack Milner

Before making your selections at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Wednesday, bettors need to take notice of two important changes.

The first is that all races carded to be run over the straight 1200m will now be run over 1250m around the turn on the Winter Course, and they are Races 2, 3, 5 and 6, which basically affects half the card.

Inside draws are usually an advantage even up the straight but of course, now they become even more relevant.

The second is that Andrew Fortune will not be riding after one of his mounts at Fairview on Monday sadly collapsed and died. When Fortune came down, he again broke his collarbone, the second time this year.

He is currently in hospital and will be out of action for some time. He had some decent rides so one needs to check on the replacements

There already has been one victim of the change of distance and that is Miyabi King who was carded to line up in Race 2, a Maiden Plate over 1200m. This well-bred son of Kingman out of Silvano mare Miyabi Gold, was highly rated by Snaith Racing in the comments in Computaform where he was described as a “nice type who will go well”.

However, having to race from No 11 draw around the turn is not an easy task for a first-timer and Justin Snaith has opted to pull him out. However, he is one to remember for when he next runs.

Lucinda Woodruff has her stable in good form and on a testing card she could be saddling up the best bet on the day and that is Witch Hazel in a Race 7, a B Stakes over 1400m. This four-year-old son of Hawwaam began his career on the Highveld where he ran three successive thirds before transferring to Woodruff in the Western Cape.

While he might not have won in Joburg, all three of those races were against some top-class opposition – African Prince, Grade 1 SA Classic champion Grand Empire and Splittheeights, who went on to win both the Grade 3 Betway Got The Greenlight Stakes and the Grade 2 Gauteng Guineas.

He put the three defeats behind him when coming to the Cape and notched up two successive victories, the first by five lengths over 1200m at Kenilworth and the second by 1.50 lengths at HWB Durbanville.

He will have no problem with the turn and from No 2 draw with Callan Murray up he can make it three from three.
