Trust can go close to booking a July berth

The battle to claim a spot in this year’s R10-million Hollywoodbets Durban July on 4 July moves ahead this weekend with a number of runners nominated for the Grade 1 race over 2200m in action at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.

Heading up the card is the Grade 3 World Sports Betting 1900 and the main contenders all appear in the list.

Perhaps the most interesting runner is Candice and Tammy Dawson-trained Trust, who comes into this race with a big reputation. The three-year-old Heavenly Blue colt has been sparingly raced and only has made six racecourse appearances. He has a record of two wins, two seconds and two thirds and has not finished further back than 2.50 lengths off the winner.

Of more relevance, other than his debut winning run, every other race has been a Graded event. He was touched off by Tin Pan Alley in the Grade 3 Betway Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m at Turffontein, won the Grade 2 Dingaans over 1600m, beating Jan Van Goyen in the process, was beaten in the Grade 3 Got The Greenlight and the Grade 2 TAB Gauteng Guineas by Splittheeights and last time came off second best in a head-bobbing duel with Grand Empire in the Grade 1 TAB SA Classic over 1800m at Turffontein.

That race proved he would be ideally suited to the 1900m of this Greyville event and as the only three-year-old in the field, comes in with just 54kg on his back.

The two concerns are his No 10 draw, which should not be too much of a burden for jockey Serino Moodley to overcome over this distance, and that he is untested at the course.

He also could be slightly in need of the race coming off a 63-day break but a win in this race would give him a leap up the ladder for a Durban July berth.

Justin Snaith has enough entries to take up half the spots in the race and he has two live runners in Regulation and Native Ruler. With contracted jockey to the owners, JP van der Merwe, taking the ride on Regulation, he looks to be the preferred runner of the pair.

The four-year-old has a win over the course and distance and also carries 54kg.

Native Ruler, however, has Andrew Fortune up so the son of Vercingetorix deserves respect, but he does has 62kg on his back.
