Substitute Domeyer picks up desirable rides at Fairview

Jack Milner

Aldo Domeyer will be making a rare trip to Fairview on Friday, but it was not originally planned. This time he will be filling in for his father, Andrew Fortune, who was injured when the horse he was riding collapsed.

Sadly, for the second time this year, Fortune has broken his collar bone and will be out of action for a number of weeks …. at least.

Despite the circumstances, Domeyer will no doubt be delighted with the quality of rides he has picked up because his father was originally standing in for Richard Fourie, who as we all know, picked up the choice rides from the Alan Greeff yard.

There are two Listed races on the card and Domeyer has picked up the strong favourites in both events.

The first is the Memorial Mile over 1600m (Race 5) and there would have been no complaints from the connections of Zinovi about the move to the Polytrack. The Greeff-trained six-year-old Heavenly Blue gelding has won seven of his last nine starts and is the defending champion.

He is unbeaten in his three runs on the Polytrack, two of them over this distance, and he seems to win easier on each occasion. He is the best weighted runner by at least 5.5kg and jumps from barrier No 2.

Domeyer would surely be disappointed if he could not win this feature event.

Race 7 is the Jockey Club Stakes over 2000m and Greeff has five of the 11 runners carded. Domeyer will be aboard highly consistent Enchanting Choice who does top the bookmakers’ boards but is not a clear favourite.

The Rafeef mare tries this distance for the first time and while she is well drawn she might be stretched by the trip.

The value could lie with stablemate Bakwena who has only had one race since moving down from the Highveld. That was over 1600m and she was running only strongly. The five-year-old Gimmethegreenlight mare will have no problem with the distance but is drawn widest of all.

Chase Maujean takes the ride.

Despite the two features, many eyes will be focused on Race 6, a Conditions Plate over 1200m, where Golden Palm makes her first appearance of the season. The Master Of My Fate filly returns from a break and drops back to sprinting, but she should prove hard to beat.

This looks another decent ride for Domeyer.
