Silver Salute could make winning return to Polytrack

Dean Kannemeyer has done well with his runners in KwaZulu-Natal and has, in particular, had good instinct as to which of his horses would perform well on the Polytrack.

So, it must have been disappointing when Silver Salute did not produce the goods when making her debut on the surface at Hollywoodbets Greyville on 17 June. The four-year-old daughter of Vercingetorix raced up with the pace but faded out late to end up in fifth place, beaten eight lengths by Ebisu.

That was only her second run in the province and her first had been on the turf at Hollywoodbets Scottsville over 1600m, where she also faded late to finish fifth, but was beaten just 2.50 lengths behind Hunga Tonga.

She was rested for just over two months and made her return last month in a Class 4 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m at Scottsville. From a wide draw she ended up at the back on the field a but once in the straight she found her stride to finish strongly, ending up in fourth place behind Another Dream, but beaten just 1.90 lengths.

She returns to Greyville on Sunday to contest another Class 4 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m and finds herself back on the Polytrack, rather by accident than design. This meeting was scheduled to take place on the turf last Friday but as result of rain was moved to the Polytrack on Sunday. However, perhaps the reason for the failure of Silver Salute on the that surface might have come for other reasons.

That race was over 1800m and she only faded late, so it could have been that the distance was too far. Back over 1600m, the distance of both of her victories, she could be a different proposition.

She will be ridden by Keagan de Melo and could prove hard to beat.
