Marshall’s star sprinter back in action

Jack Milner

Rich Man’s World was viewed by most pundits as one of the most exciting two-year-olds to have run last season and was sent off at 4-10 to win the Grade 1 Gold Medallion over 1200m.

However, he came up against another outstanding juvenile colt in the form of Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained Haute Couture and the pair fought out a thrilling right down to the wire with the latter getting the edge by 0.30 lengths.

The two stood head and shoulders above the opposition and it is worth noting the third-placed runners was a further 6.40 lengths back.

It took many longstanding racing fans back to the days of Main Man and Bush Telegraph when they too battled it out in the same race, then called the Smirnoff Plate. Main Man was the winner at the post, but the official result went the way of Garth Puller-ridden Bush Telegraph after an objection.

Neither Haute Couture nor Rich Man’s World was seen again as two-year-olds but the exciting news is that the latter, trained by Vaughan Marshall, will be back in action at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Wednesday in Race 5, a Progress Plate over 1250m.

The now three-year-old son of One World has only raced four times, winning his first three in impressive style before narrow defeat.

He currently runs off a merit rating of 115 and comes into this race as only the third-best weighted runner. He was originally fourth on that list but Marshall, who had three of the six runners carded, has withdrawn World Series.

As a three-time winner Rich Man’s World will carry top weight of 60.5kg will be giving between 2kg and 10.5kg to his opponents.

He also will be racing around the turn for the first time and will jump from the widest draw. However, he is pure class and with Richard Fourie up he looks hard to oppose.
