Hazy Dazy’s Cup prep continues

Jack Milner

The first entries for this year’s R6-million Betway Summer Cup were revealed on Wednesday, and the 43 nominated horses will be preparing to seal their places in the Highveld’s premier race.

The Grade 1 race over 2000m will be run on the Turffontein Standside track on Saturday 28 November.

Quite a few of those nominated horses will be in action at various race meetings around the country but there are quite a few who will be running at Turffontein on Saturday which will take place on the Inside track.

Heading up the meeting is the Non-Black Type Allez France Stakes over 2200m, where one Summer Cup entry, Hazy Dazy, gets the chance to bounce straight back to winning ways.
The Xander and Corne Spies-trained four-year-old last season won the first two legs of the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara and just found one two good when Littlemissmillion drove past her to win the Grade 2 SA Oaks.

Hazy Dazy went on to run in the Hollywoodbets Durban July where she unfortunately was reported to be striding short. She was given a break and made her return last week where she contested the Grade 2 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge over 1450m on the Inside track.

She looked all over a winner with 100m to go but it took a brilliant ride from Muzi Yeni aboard Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained Flower Island to deny Hazy Dazy the victory.

But it was an outstanding effort, especially as she was running over a distance short of her best and was beaten by a highly rated younger rival while conceding a hefty 9.5kg.

Hazy Dazy is back just a week later and will have to shoulder 62kg, but her tactical versatility is a major asset in a race featuring just five opponents. She is equally comfortable dictating matters or sitting off the pace and should have no difficulty making her own running if the opposition leaves her with that option.

The only real concern for the daughter of Act Of War is that she will be having her second race after a layoff just seven days later, and over 750m further.

However, she is a well-built filly and she sets a formidable standard with regular rider Trent Mayhew back aboard.
