Classy Grapes Of Wrath to prove fruitful in the Cape

Jack Milner

The Cape Summer season will shortly be sizzling and most trainers are busy honing their strings for bigger things to come.

One stable that will be out in full force at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Wednesday is the Candice Bass yard. She certainly has an exciting squad and 14 of them are carded to be in action at the eight-race meeting.

It will be a surprise if she does not come away with a winner or two and the best of the bunch looks to be Grapes Of Wrath who lines up in Race 8, a Class 5 Handicap over 1250m.

Last season as a juvenile, this daughter of Gimmethgreenlight won the Listed Irridescence Stakes over 1500m at this course on 27 June. She has not raced since so could be in need of the run but she does look so much better than her opposition and should also run fresh.

This half-sister to the brilliant Charles Dickens looks another exciting prospect for the yard and no doubt the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas will be at the top of her “things-to-do” list this summer.

She was bred by Drakenstein Stud and will run in the familiar blue and white colours.

Owner Gaynor Rupert once explained how they conceive the names for the runners they breed. She and she pointed out that if there is a theme connecting the names they will know the name of the dam the moment they hear the name of the horse.

All of Demanding Lady’s progeny have names that connect to literature, either names of authors or names of books. Some of the others bred by her are Somerset Maugham, Charlotte Bronte, Steinbeck and of course, Charles Dickens.

Grapes Of Wrath is the name of a book written by John Steinbeck and the next one to come along is another filly who has been named Harper Lee, the author of To Kill A Mockingbird.

Grapes Of Wrath is the only one out of Gimmethegreenlight.

Aldo Domeyer will be in the irons for this race and hopefully she will be able to deal with the 63kg burden on her back.

The return of top sprinters All The Rage and Tenango add spice to a competitive Race 7, an  A Stakes over 1000m.
