Catch A Penny on the Poly

Bettors are faced with a tricky midweek meeting on the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday, but it could be worth going with trainer Glen Kotzen in Race 3, a Middle Stakes for fillies and mares over 1000m.

Kotzen originally had three of the seven runners carded to contest Race 3 but Call Of The Karoo has been withdrawn due to a bruised heel and left in the race are Catch A Penny and Disting.

It is worth noting that first-choice jockey Chad Little, who does tend to ride Catch A Penny, will be aboard Disting, and that has left bettors with a bit of a conundrum.

Sean Veale will take the ride on the four-year-old Vercingetorix filly but he did ride her last time and that proved to be a winning combination. More important, that race was over the course and distance and it might have encouraged Kotzen to go with the old premise that you don’t change a winning team.

It also could be as a result of the weights as Catch A Penny is carded to carry 55.5kg and Little would have needed to put up 1kg overweight.

However, Disting is an interesting runner as her two runs were in the Grade 2 Sceptre Stakes and the Listed Olympic Duel Stakes, both over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

She did not run badly in either and will be taking a massive drop in class on this occasion.

There are obviously some concerns, the first being that she might need the outing as he last race was on 31 January. In addition, she finished unplaced on both runs on a Polytrack and she has yet to win over 1000m.

She is better weighted than her stablemate under the race conditions but perhaps Kotzen has another mission in mind for the four-year-old daughter of Global View.

For this race, however, Catch A Penny looks a sound banker in the opening leg of the Place Accumulator.
