A war ace in action at Happy Valley
In-form galloper Ace War looks well placed to continue his strong run of form in the Class 3 Handicap over 1800m at Happy Valley on Wednesday.
Ace War has enjoyed a purple patch this year, recording two wins and three placings from his past five starts. After securing back-to-back Class 4 victories two runs ago, the son of Phoenix Of Spain produced another encouraging effort on his return to Class 3 last time out. Despite being disadvantaged by a slow tempo and a wide draw, he quickened well in the straight to finish second behind The Auspicious over this track and distance.
With a favourable weight swing and Zac Purton staying aboard, Ace War looks capable of reversing the result with The Auspicious this week. However, dangerous frontrunner Liveandletlive and quality four-year-old China Win also command plenty of respect.
Five-year-old sprinter Young Arrow looks primed to atone for his narrow last-start defeat when he lines up in the Class 4 Handicap over 1200m.
Young Arrow likely found Class 3 company a touch beyond him but showed marked improvement after dropping back in grade last start. Despite carrying top weight, the son of Showtime finished strongly in a race dominated by frontrunners, going down by just a neck in third. He was also held up between the 250m and 100m mark and may well have won with a clearer run.
With a strong record in Class 4, Young Arrow should prove hard to hold out with better luck in running. Lucky McQueen, who was disadvantaged by a wide draw in the same race last time out, shapes as the main danger. – iRACE Magazine
